The Principal of Burton Regan Detective Bureau is a Full Member of The Association of British Investigators.
Christopher Graham of the Information Commissioners Office stated to the Home Affairs Committee set up to inquire into Private Investigators in February 2012, that there are, roughly 2,000 individuals or organisations that have notified his organisation that they are involved in, "An investigatory process".
Not all investigators will be private investigators. By the same token, not all private investigators will have registered themselves with the I.C.O’s office under the Data Protection Act, so the exact numbers remain something of an estimate.
If we assume that the definition of a private investigator is understood then we can skip that particular debate - perhaps around 40% of people belonging to professional associations of investigators are ex Police or Military, from this we can extrapolate that maybe 60% of the UK's private investigators actually come from other backgrounds.
The ex Police and ex Military Private Investigator will be able to use their core skills learnt in former lives and will often choose to specialise in surveillance, close protection, interviewing and specialist investigation areas such as forensics.
The general investigator will tackle more general areas of work, like: process serving, interviewing, tracing missing people, stock loss, surveillance, and the like.
With the Leveson Inquiry and associated pressures the case for licensing the UK’s Private Investigators has been made – the only issue is how and when?
The model or path which gave the Security Industry Authority the mandate to issue licences under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, is still in place and slight updates of this legislation will ensure that Licences can be enabled.
The preferred form of an investigator proving their suitability for a Private Investigator licence is that of completing an accredited training course. The EDI L3 Professional Investigator Award is the first accredited training course approved by the S.I.A...

Student View 2012
My name is Gill Baines aka student 00031. I have just completed the EDI level 3 training course and passed my exam, about which I am thrilled. When I first began researching into this field as a career path, I have to say it was a minefield. Many different websites were offering a variety of training material and, so called diplomas and certificates. I rang burton-regan initially as they seemed to be the ones who knew what they were talking about, and I'm now glad I did.
I found the training course extremely clear and concise, and, for me, easy to understand. The question and answer excercises I found particularly useful, as they helped me apply my focus to what I was learning whilst allowing me to revisit any knowledge I found difficult to retain. I also found the revision time just prior to the exam with kevin an enormous help to focus my mind.
I feel I have received enough assistance and support throughout this training to give me the confidence to now move forward with my business and, make a success of it with the continuing support, mentoring and training opportunities available to me.
Many thanks to Kevin and his team for all your advice and support.
